On our 11-night cruise “Exotic Chindwin” we will visit the unique city Monywa, which is located on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River. Monywa provides one of Myanmar’s most stunning attractions, the Thanboddhay Pagoda and the second tallest statue in the world, the Bodhi Tataung Laykyun Sekkya (Standing Buddha statue).

We disembark for our excursion to Monywa in the afternoon, and visit the most interesting historical sights of the city. The impressively styled and colourful Thanboddhay Pagoda (Thambuddhei Paya), has more than 500,000 Buddha images and features hundreds of golden spires. Walking up a watchtower at the monastery, we will get a great view over the temple complex and surrounding plains.

The famous Bodhi Tataung Laykyun Sekkya, which was built in 1995, is located nearby. With its 116 meters’ height, the Buddha statue is the second tallest statue in the word. The 31 floors referring to the ’31 planes of existence’ or 31 Realms of Life Cycle according to Buddhist literatures. Every floor features murals for each Realm, which are very famous and interesting. The statue is surrounded by Bodhi trees and a garden boasting hundreds of small Buddha statues.

Right in front of Laykyun Sekkya lies the huge Reclining Buddha which was built in 1991. The unique statue has a length of 101 meters (333 feet) and a width of 18 meters (60 feet). It is hollowed inside and displays the Great Chronicles of Buddha.

Visiting Monywa is an impressive and unique experience that you shouldn’t miss.
