Little Liam (already 12 years old) was not too happy to hear that this year’s family holiday would be in Vietnam. Mom mentioned that a few cool beach adventures would await me in Vietnam. What is Vietnam? Where is Vietnam? I wanted to go back to last year’s great beach location in Spain. I know what Spain is and where Spain is. That was the best fun I’d had in a long time.
So, this year, the family, including my sister (14 years old), my partners, and me—will travel to Vietnam and cruise in the “so-called Halong Bay.” Another “no idea” and “no go” for me. But “no choice for me, Vietnam it will be… yeah… Let’s go Halong Bay.”
So far, the pre-vacation story of little Liam, who was bound to leave for a vacation trip to Vietnam, included a cruise with Heritage Line in Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay. Most young travelers would probably have the same approach and understanding of a cruise through unknown terrain.
Generally, it is true that a Heritage Line cruise is an affair for the grownups, as it includes a lot of cultural, educational, and historical information, aside from important hospitality aspects such as great dining, relaxing wellness, various onboard entertainment, or interesting socializing for those who are open to it.
Not many think a cruise itinerary with Heritage Line through Halong Bay offers fantastic, themed aspects that would infatuate a young traveler like little Liam. In particular, Heritage Line’s 2-night cruise “Senses of Lan Ha” is also very much a family cruise. What did little Liam know…?
“Hanoi was different, so different. It was also cool to see all this action in the street and so many kids everywhere,” Liam thought on his way to Lan Ha Bay. “If this cruise is going to be half the fun of what Hanoi offered, then maybe it could be something I like,” contemplated little Liam.
“From here, you can see the first karst stones and island,” shouted the local driver to the family as the Halong Bay scenario unfolded in front of the car. “Wow!” Liam’s mother shouted out loud, and Liam threw some first curious glances out of the car at this very odd landscape he had never seen before. “Halong Bay is different, so different,” he continued his contemplation.
A Family-Happening with Heritage Line in Lan Ha Bay
“Once my mom and I got on board and into our suite, hiding my enthusiasm in front of her was a bit hard. Yes, I was negative about the Halong trip at first, but I couldn’t hold it back: ‘Mom, we have a pool on the balcony!’ ‘Go ahead, fill it for some outdoor splash fun. I’ll join you in a minute,’ she said. It was one of the oddest happenings I’ve ever had with my mom playing in a floating Jacuzzi.”

Next, our family, with little Liam, went on a bicycle tour on the famous island of Cat Ba. Liam was leading the adventure group as a cycling expert. “The 30-minute ride climaxed with some fresh coconut in a tiny village where we got to know the locals’ way of life. I had no idea,” Liam told his mother quietly. “This is how families live here.”
Getting to know local family life in a remote village can be an eye-opener, showing how fortunate our Western life really is. But the ice between Liam and the local inhabitants broke within seconds, with the locals being so friendly and welcoming, offering him coconut candy to try. That night, little Liam had one of the deepest sleeps in his young career as a seafarer.

The next morning, the family went on a cave exploration on the island. While Liam’s sister was scared (don’t worry, everything is super safe), Liam was over the moon as the new official Cat Ba Island cave explorer. Adventure and action at the same time. “What a great place this is… what was it… Cat Ba Island.”
Liam didn’t yet know that the utter highlight was still to come…
A Half Day at Your Own Pace in Lan Ha Bay
The sand was warm and soft, and the sea was sparkling and inviting on this sunny July day when Liam set foot on a hidden beach. “Unreal, Mom, it’s almost like last year in Spain.” While Mom and Dad tried their luck with stand-up paddling, little Liam was busy digging a one-meter hole in the beach, which was supposed to be his own Lan Ha Bay cave.
“Dad, shall we play some badminton? If I win, you’ll have to swim back to the ship, and I’ll take the tender boat!” Liam shouted out loud, laughing.

Heritage Line’s half day at your own pace allows anyone, including families to enjoy the afternoon as they like. Beach equipment such as snorkeling tools is available. One can also simply do nothing and savor drinks, special snacks, or fruit and just enjoying the wonderful seascape unfolding in front.

Liam spent the whole afternoon without a plan, just enjoying an amazing summer day with his sister and parents, time afloat.
What An Ending – Happy and Happy
Onboard Heritage Line ‘Ylang’, you don’t just cruise through Lan Ha Bay. You live it. From floating Jacuzzis to beach relaxation, from cycling adventures to coconut surprises, this wasn’t just a cruise. It was a family memory in the making.
For families looking to blend relaxation and adventure, Heritage Line ‘Ylang’ offers the perfect balance: grownups enjoy elegant wellness, gourmet dining, and stunning scenery, while kids like me get to explore, play, and discover things we never expected.
Checking out at the Tuan Chau pier, the only thing Liam could ask his mom was, “Mommy, do we come back here next year?”
Turns out, a cruise holiday in Vietnam isn’t just for grownups. It’s a whole new world for everyone.
