When you think of a cruise manager, you might picture a calm, collected individual who oversees the smooth operation of a luxurious ship. But behind the title, there’s often a remarkable story of grit, determination, and personal growth. For Mr.Voant, the current cruise manager of Heritage Line ‘The Jahan’, his journey is a tale of overcoming hardship and following a dream that once seemed distant but is now very much within reach.
A Childhood Shaped by War and Survival
Born during a time of conflict, Voant’s childhood was far from easy. Growing up in Cambodia during the tail end of the war, he experienced firsthand the struggles of survival. With seven siblings and being the second-born, he knew that his path to a better life would require more than just hope.
Starting school at the age of 12, long after his peers, was just one of the many hurdles he faced. In 1990, education was a luxury few could afford, and it wasn’t until he began attending school that he started to dream of a brighter future. “All I wanted was peace for my country, for my family. I dreamt of becoming a teacher, to bring knowledge to my village, to help others learn.”
The Dream of Learning English
While most kids were stuck memorizing math formulas or trying to figure out history dates, Mr. Voant had a different goal: to learn English. The only problem? There were no formal classes available, so he had to be creative. “I was studying English illegally,” he laughs. “Anywhere I could pick up a word, I’d take it!”
His methods weren’t exactly textbooks as he learned from family members, neighbors, even from people at the local church. By 2000, his self-taught skills were sharp enough that he started volunteering at a riverside hotel, offering help in exchange for more practice. “I wasn’t getting paid in money, but I was definitely getting paid in words,” he chuckles.

In 2003, all that practice paid off when he joined a river cruise as a steward. That’s when Mr. Voant discovered a new passion for hospitality and tourism.
Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve His Career Goals

The road to success wasn’t smooth for Mr. Voant. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of formal support made his early career a challenge. But his resilience meant that he never gave up. His commitment to growth eventually saw him promoted from steward to cook, waiter, supervisor, and ultimately, assistant manager. By 2015, after years of dedication, Mr. Voant was appointed Cruise Manager of ‘The Jahan’, a position that would allow him to lead with the same compassion and work ethic he had cultivated throughout his life.
Why the River? Why ‘The Jahan’?
For Mr. Voant, the Mekong River represents more than just his job – it’s a part of his soul. Before joining the vessel, he volunteered in community development and wildlife conservation. Now, through the cruise, he’s able to give back by supporting local schools and NGOs along the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. “It’s a small but meaningful way of helping the people and places that shaped me.”

Mr. Voant also leads with the philosophy that the crew is family. His leadership style centers around care and respect. “It’s about balance—happy ship, happy travelers,” he says, emphasizing that both staff and guests are key to creating an unforgettable experience.
