Mr. Tri – Heritage Line’s Mekong Delta Pioneer

Mr. Tri – Heritage Line’s resident Tour Guide knows the Mekong Delta like the back of his hand

Meet Mr. Tri Nguyen, Heritage Line’s most experienced and knowledgeable tour guide aboard our two luxury cruisers plying the lower Mekong River, The Jahan and Jayavarman.

Mr. Tri (pronounced like the English word ‘tree’) comes from a small province in the Mekong Delta, not far from the Cambodian border. “Life follows an easy routine and daily cycle here in the Delta,” he states, “Most of the people are farmers or fishermen. They get up very early, have steamed rice for breakfast, go to work for the whole day and in the evening go to bed early.”

And while the routine may be simple, Tri’s approach to guiding is anything but! With a smile as warm as a sun-soaked morning, Tri transforms each tour into an adventure full of laughter and local insights. “You know you’re in the Delta when your biggest decision of the day is whether to have your coffee iced or hot!” he quips, perfectly capturing the laid-back spirit of the region.

Currents of Curiosity: The Voyage Through the Mekong Delta

Growing up in the Mekong Delta, with a small canal flowing right in front of his house, Tri often refers to it as his “home away from home.” His childhood adventures were filled with market trips and family excursions to rice fields, all navigated by boat along that beloved canal—an early sign of his future in tourism, perhaps!

Another hint of his calling came when he frequently encountered international tourists along the river. Their diverse languages sparked his curiosity, igniting a desire to learn more about the world beyond his own. He chose English as his gateway to connect with different cultures. This decision led him to major in English during his college years, practicing his skills not just in the classroom but also alongside travelers on the Mekong.

After completing his studies, Tri initially considered becoming a local English teacher. However, a pivotal trip to another city changed everything. An unforgettable tour led by a lively guide ignited his passion for tourism. “I realized I could make a living by sharing my love for this incredible place!” he laughs, recalling that fateful day. And so, with a motorcycle and a heart full of dreams, he set off to explore the Delta, discovering the enchanting riverside life, one floating market at a time.

Tri landed his first job as a tour guide for a local travel company as he leads adventures from the vibrant south to the historic north of Vietnam. He shares breathtaking landscapes, introduces travelers to local communities, and sprinkles in super jokes that might even make the Mekong’s fish giggle.

Every week, Tri travels along the majestic Mekong, witnessing the vibrant life that thrives along its banks. From bustling fishing activities to busy cargo boats and floating fish farms, he delights in sharing these sights with his guests. “It’s incredible to see the energy of the river—each trip reveals something new,” he says, his eyes lighting up with excitement.

Aboard Luxury: Tri’s Journey with Heritage Line’s Lux-Ships on Lower Mekong

Mr. Tri is one of the pioneers of Heritage Line, joining the company shortly after its founding in 2009. During his decade-long tenure with Heritage Line, he has met thousands of passengers and guided hundreds of cruises as the leading tour guide on board. Furthermore, he has taken a major role in the development of our unique on-shore excursions.

For Tri, working on two vessels, The Jahan and Jayavarman, is like operating between two different worlds. Each vessel brings him unique vibes with its distinct décor and theme. As he moves between these two floating homes, Tri relishes the opportunity to connect with different travelers from around the globe. Another equally important to Tri is the bond he shares with the staff on board. He often remarks that it’s these relationships that truly enhance his work, transforming routine trips into heartfelt journeys filled with laughter and warmth. Over the years, they have become like family to him. Together, they navigate not just the winding waterways of the Mekong but also the ups and downs of daily life in tourism.

Uncover the Lower Mekong with Heritage Line and Mr. Tri

Mr. Tri has friends almost in every corner of the Mekong Delta. “The villagers are like my family. We exchange different topics each time we meet which I share again with our guests. That creates a true moment of uniqueness – a fond and spontaneous interaction with the local people.”

We at Heritage Line believe that Mr. Tri contributes perhaps the most essential component to our cruise experiences: authenticity. And just as importantly, Mr. Tri is also our scout in the Delta, investigating new ideas for our cruise programs. It is because of him and his team that we continually improve and evolve our on-shore excursions along the fascinating Mekong.
